Shin-Okubo food walk: 10 spots the locals love

IGO JournalJune 1, 20261 min read

From Korean street snacks to hidden izakayas, a walking guide to the neighbourhood.

Shin-Okubo is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel. This multicultural corner of Tokyo packs Korean, Vietnamese, Nepalese, and Thai flavours into a single street.

Head north from I GO HOTEL and you'll first hit the Korean fried chicken specialists lining Okubo-dori. Dakgalbi, yangnyeom chicken, hot dogs — and the tteokbokki stall that draws a weekend queue.

Step into the side alleys and you'll find izakayas only the locals know. Some are classic Japanese small-plate joints; others recreate the home cooking of a Korean grandmother.

At night the streets transform — yatai smoke, neon signs, tourists and salarymen mingling in an atmosphere you won't find anywhere else in Tokyo.
