A photographer's guide to Tokyo's brightest neighbourhood after dark.
Kabukicho is an 8-minute walk from the hotel. Japan's largest entertainment district transforms into something else after dark — neon and crowds turn the streets into a different organism.
For photographs, start at the Godzilla head atop the TOHO cinema. A wide-angle lens can capture the signage, the people, and the rain-wet street reflections in a single frame.
Step into Hanamichi-dori or the side alleys off Ichiban-gai for more intimate compositions. Narrow passages packed with izakaya curtains, paper lanterns, smoke rising from chimneys — the texture of old Tokyo still lives here.
Golden Gai is a 10-minute walk away. Two hundred tiny bars crammed into six alleyways take on their best atmosphere late at night. You don't have to go in — just walking past is photogenic enough.
Note: Kabukicho is generally safe, but ignore touts, don't enter unfamiliar clubs, and keep valuables minimal. With those simple rules you can enjoy the night freely.
